Nissan: Very High Up on the Fecal Roster

Here's the letter we've just sent to TBWA and to Nissan. If you like it, feel free to copy any parts of it.

Dear Sir:

We are writing about the advertisement for the Nissan Frontier that has aired in various markets. In the ad, Nissan's Jerry Hirschberg tells us that the Frontier is "Powerful and Muscular." Then he goes on to tell us that the Frontier sends a message. And what is that message? "Get out of my way!"

Now really. Are there not enough self-centered, inconsiderate drivers on our roads already? Is it not somewhat irresponsible of Nissan to blatantly condone such outrageous behavior and to suggest that the Frontier can make one even more successful at being rude and otherwise obnoxious? With all the attention being given to road rage and its various manifestations, to suggest that "Get out of my way" is an appropriate message for anyone is beyond comprehension.

As co-hosts of Car Talk on National Public Radio, we are frequently asked by our radio listeners and visitors to our web site to suggest appropriate vehicles for purchase. We can not in good conscience suggest buying a vehicle from a company with such a Neanderthal sense of corporate responsibility.

We might reconsider this position if we and the law-abiding drivers of America receive a public apology and an explanation of what you were thinking--if you were thinking at all.

Sincerely,

Tom & Ray
